Little Things - When You Don't Know Where to Start

I was raised in church, and one of the beautiful results is the belief that the God of the universe has a plan for my life. I have been taught to dream big in a big God.
And the miraculous thing is, after all these years, I still do. I still believe He’s able to do far more than I could ever ask, think, or imagine.
Here's where I get hung up, two things actually...
Either I don’t know what it is I’m being called to in this season of life,
OR
I know what He is calling me to, but it seems so big, so overwhelming, that I don’t know where to start to get to where I think He is leading me.
Recently, though, God made me aware of something, and I wrote this in my journal:
A seed. A pearl.
A drink. A penny.
A flower. A coin.
A lamb.
Small things. Kingdom growers.
Earth shakers. Heart changers.
Chain breakers. Life savers.
“Do not despise these small beginnings for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin...”
—Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)
A staff. A baby. A basket.
A spark. A jawbone. A stone.
A bowl. A tent peg. A plum line.
A handful of flour. A song. A lunch.
A cattle prod.
I have no excuse;
I have all that I need.
He might be calling you to something big, but there’s always something little He wants you to start with.
So, here’s what I’ve been doing.
I start by saying, “I have all that I need.”
(If you missed my last post about this, click the link to learn more.)
Then I ask,
“What little thing can I do next?”
And if it’s not in opposition to God’s word, then I do it.
It may not feel like much, but it’s a step of obedience. And if you do this regularly, little by little, you will move in step with Him, and live out His purpose and plans for your life.
God says it plainly in Luke 16:10: “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.” (NLT)
Little things are big things in the Kingdom of God, and we won’t experience the big things until we are faithful with the little ones.
Would you pray with me?
Father, thank You for giving us everything we need.
For calling us by name to follow You.
We want to do great things, but knowing You is more important.
We want to be where You are, doing the things that matter to You.
Thank You for using our small steps of faith.
Forgive us for all of our excuses.
Father, purify our hearts.
And through the power of Your Spirit,
may we bless You with obedient hearts and minds.
For Your Kingdom.
For Your glory.
Amen.
